Hitech targets strong start to 2026 F3 campaign in Melbourne

The official third rung of the Road to F1 ladder, the FIA Formula 3 Championship was created when the FIA combined GP3 with Formula 3 European to create a more defined entry point to the Formula 1 progression pathway. It is the perfect training ground for both F2, and ultimately F1, allowing young drivers to demonstrate their speed and tyre management abilities. As with F2, it races on the F1 platform, so drivers are able to demonstrate their talents in front of both the F2 teams they may take a step up with, and F1 teams keeping a close eye on where their next star driver may be coming from. 2025 sees the introduction of a new generation of F3 car.

The 21-year-old made his FIA Formula 3 debut in 2023, contesting three rounds and making history as the first driver from South Korea to compete in the third tier of the FIA’s official single-seater ladder.

Michael’s racing journey began in 2022, when he competed in the F4 UAE Championship and the British F4 Championship, securing his first race win at Brands Hatch.

In 2023, Michael raced in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship, picking up a podium finish. He then joined Hitech for the GB3 Championship that year, scoring regular points before stepping up to FIA Formula 3 mid-season with another team.

The following year, Michael raced in Eurocup-3, earning four podiums and finishing 7th in the championship. He also competed in the Formula Regional Oceania championship, where he took a win and four additional podiums to end the season 4th overall. In addition, he completed a part-time campaign in Euroformula Open, claiming two victories to finish 6th in the drivers’ championship.

For 2025, Michael continued his development in Euroformula Open, gaining further experience ahead of his full-time step up to FIA Formula 3 with Hitech.

The 17-year-old from Northern Ireland is part of the Red Bull Academy, having joined the programme in the summer of 2024 after a hugely competitive evaluation as one of 11 invited candidates from around the world.

The reigning British F4 Champion began karting at the age of five, and by the time he was seven he was competing in and winning various championships around Ireland.

He has since enjoyed success at British, European and world level and spent 2024 competing in the OK class. Notable achievements include being vice-champion of the 2022 British Karting Championships and vice-champion of the 2022 Iame World Games.

In 2022, McLaughlin competed in the CIK-FIA European Championships finishing seventh overall in his first year in the category. In 2023, McLaughlin would also compete in the FIA Karting World Championship claiming pole position in his group. Fionn would also claim three heat wins across the weekend, narrowly missing out on winning the final due to an engine failure. He also finished sixth in the 2024 FIA Karting World Championship.
