A home F2 race for Hitech as Silverstone hosts Round 8

Round 8 - Silverstone - Preview

We’re home! Back in the UK and just a few hundred metres from our operational base at Silverstone for Round 8 of the 14-event FIA Formula 2 calendar, taking place from 4-6 July.

This is the second event of the mid-season double-header and it comes hot on the heels of a very positive weekend in Austria last time out, where the team enjoyed a double points finish. Both Luke Browning and Dino Beganovic will be focused on a similarly strong performance in front of the team’s home crowd, and to ensure they maintain the current momentum towards their personal goals for the season.

We’re now embarking on the second half of the season and the competition is really hotting up as the championship battles take on a new intensity with two titles at stake.

Luke and Dino met that challenge head-on last time out in Austria, concluding the Feature Race in fifth and ninth positions respectively. They each improved on their grid positions by an impressive 12 places.

Luke heads into his home event fifth in the Drivers’ Standings and on a mission to recover the lead he held earlier in the season. Dino sits in tenth place.

Hitech continues to fight for the top spot in the Teams’ Standings and will be aiming to close the gap in the forthcoming races.

Silverstone is always a firm favourite for many on the grid. Its high-speed characteristics mean that it demands plenty from the cars, in terms of setup and tyre management. The downforce requirement is high due to the combination of the long DRS zones and the sweeping nature of the circuit, which puts an emphasis on the right balance going through the corners. The focus on heavy braking is saved only for Turns 3 and the Vale Chicane which demand sudden deceleration. Turn 3 under braking is also a primary overtaking spot, along with Stowe at the end of the DRS zone.

The Pirelli Soft and Hard tyres will be used here, as has been the case in recent years, as it is one of the hardest tracks on the tyres. The optimum strategy is to benefit from the significant advantage provided by the softest compound at the start, which also enables the drivers to attempt overtaking moves and make up places. The Hard provides the consistency for drivers to be able to maintain good pace over a long stint and it is the tyre of choice for the Sprint Race.

The UK is currently enjoying a heatwave, but the British Grand Prix always invites a few rain showers – if not a full-blown downpour – to spice up the action. It is the drivers who adapt well to the mixed conditions – which can often vary from session to session – who have the edge.
