A clean sweep of GB3 podiums at Zandvoort

Round 2 - Zandvoort - Report

Hitech TGR enjoyed a clean sweep of podium finishes at Zandvoort to maintain their position at the top of the Teams’ standings in this year’s GB3 Championship. On the series’ overseas visit to the Netherlands, Deagen Fairclough secured second and third-place finishes, while Keanu Al Azhari rounded off the weekend in style with third in the reverse grid race.

Sunday’s third race was a more frantic affair than the earlier contests and featured two Safety Car interventions. Keanu started third on the grid and admitted the race lead was in his sights.

Keanu Al Azhari:

“I had a really good launch, a great getaway. If I’d had a clear run, I think I would’ve slotted into P1, but I just ran out of space.”

Keanu continued:

“I didn’t want to take too many risks into Turn 1, so I dropped to P4 when I probably could’ve put my nose in for P1. But then we had solid pace over the next few laps and we managed to slot by for third at Turn 4 with a really nice move. From then on, it was just a bunch of Safety Cars, which was unfortunate.

“Our tyre management has been really good this weekend and the team have done a great job,” added Keanu. “We’ve made a step forward from Silverstone. I think we just need a bit more luck in Qualifying. We know we have the pace – we just haven’t been able to show that yet with Race 1 and Race 2 podiums.”

Behind Keanu, both Nikita Johnson and Deagen brilliantly avoided a three-car pile-up on lap six and gained a couple of positions. Nikita started the reverse grid race in eighth and climbed to sixth by the flag. Meanwhile, Deagen began the third and final race of the weekend in 11th and made up seven positions to secure fourth place. Adding to his two podiums earlier in the event, it capped a strong weekend for Deagen, who has now risen to joint third in the overall standings.

Deagen Fairclough:

“We had a really quick Qualifying car and it was a mistake on my part not to put us on the front row. I had a poor second phase to my launch, which set us back - we lost a few positions, but I was able to fight back up to third.”

Deagen continued:

“I think there was just a bit more grip on the inside and I didn’t realise that. On my first start, I was wheel-spinning so much, so I thought I’d just modulate the clutch a bit slower – but then it bit too quickly.”

Nikita managed to achieve a fifth-place finish in Race 2, which was a strong recovery from his spin at Tarzan in the opening race of the weekend. Hitech leave the Dutch seaside circuit ten points clear of their nearest rivals at the top of the Teams’ Championship.

Round 3 takes place at Spa in a fortnight.
