Hitech drivers make strong start to 2026 F3 campaign

Round 1 - Melbourne - Report

Hitech’s FIA Formula 3 campaign got underway at Albert Park with solid performances from the team’s three drivers in the season opener, including Jin Nakamura claiming his first points of the year.

Qualifying set the grid for the weekend and Jin Nakamura led the Hitech runners, taking P15, while Fionn McLaughlin produced a very respectable P18 in his first F3 qualifying session after moving up directly from British F4. Michael Shin completed the session in P28, a red flag limiting drivers from improving on their second flying laps.

The 20-lap Sprint Race on Saturday saw Jin move up one place to finish P13, Fionn gained two positions to take P15, and Michael finished P25, all gaining experience in close midfield battles.

In the 23-lap Feature Race on Sunday, Jin started P13 and finished 9th, while Fionn finished 14th. Michael’s race came to a premature conclusion on lap 20 after contact with the barriers at Turn 6.

Across the weekend, the Hitech drivers showed encouraging pace, consistency, and adaptability as they took their first steps in the 2026 F3 season. Jin in particular delivered strong performances in both races, establishing himself as a consistent points contender.

Jin Nakamura:

“The car felt good all weekend and the pace was there. I’m really happy to have achieved our first points finish of the season, and there’s plenty to build on for the next round.”

Clive Hatton, Hitech’s Deputy Team Principal:

“It’s been a very encouraging start to the season for all three drivers. Jin delivered strong performances in both races to get the team’s first points on the board, Fionn can be pleased after taking a significant step up to the series, and Michael gained further experience in a challenging field. The whole team can take confidence from the opening weekend, and we’ll aim to build on this momentum.”

Jin Nakamura opens his points account with 10th in the Drivers’ standings after Round 1, while the team sits an early P7.
