Pro Mazda Champion Rinus VeeKay joins Hitech GP for Asian F3 Winter Series

Hitech GP are delighted to add 2018 Pro Mazda Champion Rinus van Kalmthout (VeeKay) to their line up for the newly-formed Asian F3 Winter Series, certified by the FIA. The eighteen-year-old Dutchman, reigning from Hoofddorp in the Netherlands, will join the Silverstone-based outfit in three rounds across Asia, set to take place between January and February 2019.

Hitech GP claimed title honours in the inaugural FIA F3 Asian Championship this year, with one remaining round on the calendar, and will now fight for victory in the newly launched Winter Series certified by the FIA. The series is set to debut early next year and will consist of two rounds at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia and a further at Thailand’s Buriram International Circuit. The Silverstone-based team will field the Asian F3 Tatuus T-318 in a four-car entry, with Rinus van Kalmthout the first confirmed Hitech GP contender.

Impressive track record

Dutch KNAF Talent First car racing talent Rinus van Kalmthout, better known as Rinus VeeKay in the world of motorsport, has had numerous accolades in his formative years, building up an impressive record of wins and championship titles to his name. After winning multiple Dutch karting championships, VeeKay claimed a runner-up position in the European and American Rotax Max Senior championships in 2015, at just 14 years old.

His momentum continued after being selected in Las Vegas by the Mazda Road to Indy organisation for a USF2000 test in Austin, Texas, finishing third quickest overall without any car-racing experience under his belt. In 2017, VeeKay started his Road to Indy competing in the USF2000 championship, sealing a runner-up result in his Rookie season with 3 wins and 12 podiums out of 14 races. He then went on to make his debut in the Pro Mazda Series in 2018, securing title honours and a total of 6 pole positions, 7 wins and 3 track records.

The F3 Asian Championship Certified by FIA Winter Series will get underway at Buriram International Circuit in Thailand on the 11-13 January 2019 as part of the Asian Le Mans Series.

Hitech GP’s F3 Asia Team Manager, Phil Blow, commented:

“We are delighted to welcome Rinus to the team for the Asian F3 Winter Series. His success over the past few years proves that he is an extremely capable driver. Following such a successful season in the inaugural Asian F3 Championship this year, we are confident that we will be able to secure some promising results in the Winter Series.”

Rinus added:

“This is the perfect preparation for my Indy Lights season in America – fielding many miles in a state-of-the-art Formula 3 car with an extremely professional team. I was at the team’s facility in Silverstone and they work at the same level as a Formula 1 team. I also met my engineer, a highly experienced and critical person who can make me an even better driver. That’s exactly what I’m looking for.”
