Multiple race-winning FIA Formula 3 European Championship team Hitech GP has today, Friday, 12th August, officially confirmed its two car line-up for next weekend’s annual Masters of Formula 3 event at Zandvoort – Russian racer Nikita Mazepin will be partnered by GP3 Series driver Alex Albon.
Mazepin, already a top 10 finisher during his maiden season of F3 racing this year with the Silverstone-based squad, will be the sole participant in the Masters from Hitech’s regular FIA F3 line-up with George Russell and Ben Barnicoat both choosing to forego the standalone event where the cars run on Kumho tyres rather than the Hankook rubber utilised in the European series.
Albon, who is currently second in FIA Formula One World Championship support category GP3 and a mere three points shy of the series lead, makes a welcome return to F3 machinery having finished seventh overall in the FIA F3 European Championship in 2015.
The 20-year-old Anglo-Thai racer, who is also eyeing participation in the end-of-year Macau F3 Grand Prix, secured five podiums in FIA F3 last year and was previously a front-runner in Formula Renault and a multiple championship winner in karting.
“We wanted to support the Masters as it’s always been a great event, so it was logical for Nikita to take part and gain some extra race experience”, said Hitech GP team principal Oliver Oakes, “It’s ended-up being a nice fit having Alex join us – he did well in F3 last year and although it’s tough jumping in for a one-off race in different machinery, and very different tyres, I’m sure he’ll be fine.”
Following two free practice sessions at Zandvoort next Friday, 19th August, qualifying will take place at 09.55 (local time) on Saturday, 20th August, followed by the first race of the weekend at around 14.45 (local time). On Sunday, 21st August, the blue riband Masters of Formula 3 race will begin at 15.00 (local time) and will be contested over 25 laps.
